In the Information Age, the powered devices that play a singular role in our lives, such as your refrigerator, television or computer, can now do more things than ever before because of the power of networks.

The invention of wireless networks allows us to transfer information without cables. However, the same cannot be said about power. It can be a real struggle finding a solution to provide power to a device that is situated in awkward and hard to reach places, plus can lead to messy extension cable-in-extension cable mess, ad infinitum.

Or at least it was, before Power over Ethernet, or PoE, hit the scene. PoE technology makes it possible to power these hard to reach devices, while also supplying them with a network connection. We love PoE, which is why we made our very own PoE Adapter to power and drive network to your Airtame 2s. We think you’ll love it.

But how does PoE actually work? Let’s dig a little deeper.

What is Power over Ethernet?

You can connect devices like your computer to your network through a wire, an Ethernet connection, as opposed to wirelessly via WiFi. PoE is simply a way of supplying power over that Ethernet connection, so using PoE means a single Ethernet cable can supply both electrical power and data.

The concept of supplying a direct current to a wire carrying a signal has been around since the 1900s. Here’s a quick rundown of how PoE emerged from a technology called “phantom power”.

The birth of PoE

Before there was PoE, there was phantom power. In the 1900s, the first electric telephone used phantom power to run an electric current through the same wire that transmitted the signal (i.e. your voice) in order to ring and alert the other person of an incoming call. Phantom power is still used in condenser microphones, like those used in music production, to power the microphones while also carrying the vocal input.

Fast-forward to the 1990s and the common office and classroom were using Voice over IP, or VoIP, phones, which can make calls over the internet. The old electric telephones were long obsolete, but the problem remained of how to power the phones in a smart and safe way. To add fuel to the fire, IT administrators found themselves having to power access points and security cameras that often sit in out-of-sight corners of the room, not always near a power source.

Many were hard at work to create a solution, but in the end, Cisco was the first to create successful PoE although it was proprietary technology, meaning it was only used internally for Cisco’s own needs.

Many of the first solutions involved directly injecting power into an Ethernet cable with no safety measures in the event that you accidentally plugged in a device not meant to receive power. The risks involved were frying your devices, in the best case scenario, and possibly sparking a fire, in the worst case scenario.

Luckily, it didn’t take long for PoE to become standardized for wider use in 2003 by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) which ensured safety regulations. From that time, PoE has evolved into 4 different types, each type more powerful than the last.

Devices that use PoE

PoE was initially created for security cameras and VoIP phones, but nowadays, there is an increasing number of Internet of Things, or IoT, gadgets putting a strain on power supply. In the most simple terms, the IoT consists of a network of devices connected over the internet.

For example, an IoT device can be something like a wireless sound system in a smart home, or even a heart monitor implant with wireless capabilities.

Power over Ethernet plays a big role for many of these devices because it is used for a growing range of devices, such as: security cameras, VoIP telephones, access points, PTZ conferencing cameras, energy efficient flat screens, thin client computers, and wireless screen sharing devices, like Airtame 2. Our PoE adapter is the smoothest, most stable and efficient means of powering your Airtame 2, while also driving network connectivity to it.

Types of Power over Ethernet

There are currently 4 types of standardized PoE: Types 1, 2, 3 and 4. The different types of PoE have to do with the amount of power they can supply to a device. As the power demands have grown over the years, PoE technology has had to adapt to meet the demands.

Type 1 (IEEE 802.3af) – Maximum power to port: 15.4W

Used for VoIP phones and static surveillance cameras

Type 2 (IEEE 802.3at) – Maximum power to port: 30W

Used for devices like high-end surveillance cameras with pan, tilt, and zoom, wireless access points with 6 antennas, LCD display

Type 3 (IEEE 802.3bt) – Maximum power to port: 60W

Used for devices such as video conferencing systems

Type 4 (IEEE 802.3bt) – maximum power to port: 100W

Used for devices such as energy efficient flat screens

The benefits of using Power over Ethernet

There are a few reasons why Power over Ethernet is so convenient and spreading in popularity.

For devices in hard to reach places

The reason PoE technology was developed was to create a more efficient setup for devices that are in hard to reach places.

Previously, you would have to install power outlets nearby or have electrical cables running up to these places, but these solutions can be costly and clunky. Not to mention, the maintenance for electrical infrastructure can be quite expensive as well. Using Ethernet cables is a more flexible solution that won’t break the bank because it removes the need for nearby power outlets.

Cost-effective alternative

Most schools and businesses have network cables installed already, so it makes sense to use a solution like PoE that can utilize your existing infrastructure.

For larger organizations, safety regulations around electrical power mean that changing electrical infrastructure involves a lot of red tape, not to mention the costs of an electrician. With PoE, you don’t need to be an electrician to install the equipment, because most of it is designed to just plug in and use safely.

Tidier setup

The happy side effect of PoE is that it cuts down on bulky cable clutter and makes for a much tidier environment. A clean setup certainly makes your office or classroom look sleeker, but it’s not just about looks. With less cables, it’s also easier to maintain and troubleshoot, since you don’t have to slosh through a pile of cables.

Better network security

In general, if you have to choose between a wireless connection and a wired Ethernet connection, take your network’s security into consideration. A wired network connection is always more secure, since wireless connections are more vulnerable to interception (more on network security here).

So, a plain old Ethernet connection gives you more wireless network security than wireless, but if you go with Power over Ethernet, you get that and power simultaneously.

      <div

Limitations of Power over Ethernet

PoE is a technology created mainly for small devices that are not near an electrical outlet. As a result, there are a few limitations to PoE that you might want to consider.

For devices that consume higher amounts of electricity, PoE might not be able to supply enough current to power these devices. Type 4 PoE, for example, supplies less than 1 Amp of current whereas a device like a computer needs 6.7 Amps to run.

Another thing to keep in mind is that PoE power source equipment cannot create a network connection on their own. If you do not have a network infrastructure already in place, you would first need to install the network cables. This is not a major obstacle since most schools and companies do have this infrastructure set up already in order to deal with the average demand for internet connection.

There are really not too many caveats to choosing PoE. It may not be able to power your high energy-consuming laptop, but for your TV screens, access points, and similar devices, it is worth it.

Setting up PoE

PoE is easy to install, since much of the equipment comes ready to go out of the box, so it’s quickly integrated into your network. Its flexibility, lower costs, and cable-clutter reducing advantages make it a no brainer for many schools and businesses.

There are a few different types of power sourcing equipment (PSE) that can add PoE to your network. Here are some of the ways you can set up PoE to power your devices through an Ethernet cable:

PoE injector

If you already have a regular network switch, you don’t need to run out and buy a new PoE switch to replace it. Instead, you can consider a PoE injector, also known as a midspan, for adding PoE capabilities between the network switch and a PoE device.

A PoE injector simply injects power onto an Ethernet cable. It is a plug and play solution, meaning that you can easily add PoE capabilities to your network with very little effort.

PoE switch

A PoE switch is a network switch (unsure what a network switch is? Check out this article covering all the basic network terminology) with PoE built in. You can use a PoE switch to create a hub where you can plug in and power multiple PoE-enabled devices using a single network connection.

The PoE switch typically connects to your router and can be used for a mix of PoE devices and non-PoE compliant devices, since most switches will supply just the network connection if you plug in a non-PoE device. If you would like your non-PoE compliant devices to receive both power and a network connection, you would need to use a PoE splitter (more on this in the section below on PoE splitter).

PoE splitter

If you have a PoE switch or injector to power your devices, but you have non-PoE compliant devices you’d like to power, a PoE splitter is the perfect way to upgrade these devices.

A PoE splitter takes a PoE connection and separates it into two output cables for data and power. These two output cables can then be plugged into your non-PoE compliant as normal. This is an excellent solution if you plan to have a mix of PoE and non-PoE devices on your network.

PoE charger

In the case where you only need to power your device, but do not need a network connection, a PoE charger is the perfect solution. You can connect a PoE charger to your Ethernet cable and it will pull the power from the network connection and supply it to your device.

PoE to USB

There are times when your devices are powered through a USB port. Unfortunately, not many USB devices come equipped for this situation, so you might consider a PoE to USB adapter. If you’re lucky, however, your device has its own compatible accessory.

For example, we created the Airtame PoE Adapter designed specifically for the Airtame 2 in order to supply it with power and Ethernet connection over USB.

The future of Power over Ethernet

Power over Ethernet technology continues to evolve because it is such a flexible solution, which lends itself to more creative uses. One thing is for certain, PoE technology is getting more and more powerful. The latest PoE type, Type 4 (IEEE 802.3bt), came out in September 2018 and can now power some energy-efficient TV screens, which wasn’t possible before.

An interesting use of PoE to keep an eye on is PoE lighting. PoE can be used to power LED lights, which are rapidly growing in popularity due to their energy-saving capacity compared to old fluorescent lights. By connecting LED lights with Ethernet, it is possible to create a smart lighting environment.

Imagine an LED light programmed with an occupancy sensor and connected to your network via PoE. This setup could help you monitor the usage of a room and could even be used by office managers to optimize their workplace.

PoE: A smart choice

We don’t know for certain if PoE will be the main power source for the smart house of the future. However, one thing is certain. PoE technology is reducing the amount of bulk cabling, and perhaps, one day can help eliminate it altogether.

A cleaner, cable-free office or classroom creates a productive workspace for end users and for IT administrators, PoE is a more streamlined, efficient alternative.

Power over Ethernet solves the issue of powering devices that are not near a power supply source. And installing and maintaining PoE equipment is much easier than more complex electrical installations. If you want a convenient and reliable way to power your devices while simultaneously connecting them to your network, then PoE is the only choice.

There’s a demand for wireless alternatives to our beloved gadgets. Nowadays, we want music, video, games, and traditional phone functions to fit into our pocket, and because of the high demand for smarter gadgets, wireless accessories have quickly followed suit.

Is there a wireless alternative to what used to be wired? You might think that the answer is no; that cable management comes in the form of organizers like zippers, boxes, zip ties, and wiring covers.

      <div

Cables are so last year

We think the fundamental issue with cables is the technology itself, not how to manage it.

Hiding cables is still a big design trend in modern offices. To do it right, however, you might need to open up walls and lift up floors to install hidden cables, which is not all that sustainable and means more maintenance in the long run. That doesn’t sound like it takes the hassle away, does it? Add to that, it can cost a pretty penny and eat up a lot of time.

If you know anything about Airtame, it’s probably that we don’t like cables. We think that the easiest cable management is simply to get rid of them!

Instead of sweeping your cable problems under an expensive figurative (or literal?) rug, there are beautiful, innovative, and flexible solutions available.

To get started on your clutter diet, here are four initial ways you can truly embrace the future of office design.

1. Wireless keyboards

Wireless keyboards use either USB or Bluetooth to connect. Bluetooth-connected ones could save battery whereas connecting by USB is more reliable.

Like many other electronics, keyboards are becoming smaller and much more crammed to look at and type on. Logitech’s K800 Wireless Illuminated keyboard isn’t one of them. The K800 may not be the best portable option but definitely one of the most comfortable if you’re planning on staying desk-bound most of the time.

The keyboard has backlit keys for those long hours at night. The keys will dim as you retract your hands, and you can of course also reduce or increase brightness easily. The keyboard is connected via USB. All that at a modest price point of $99.99.

      <div

2. Wireless speakers

Sound quality and portability are the two main things to look at when you want to pick a wireless speaker. We’re focusing mainly on the portable speakers in this post, the ones you need for that impromptu team meeting or work Friday bar.

For that reason, our favorite wireless speaker is the Ultimate Ears MEGABLAST. Value-for-money is spot on in the MEGABLAST, and the sound quality is incredible. It’s Bluetooth and WiFi compatible. The Bluetooth connectivity is rated at 150 feet, about five times that of other portable speakers.

UE MEGABLAST delivers 360 degrees sound and at much higher volumes than many others on the market. Waterproof, durable, 16 hours of battery life – oh, and it’s Amazon Alexa-enabled. You can find it on Ultimate Ears’ own site for $245 but we’ve seen it significantly cheaper many other places.

For your Friday bar, we recommend investing in a SOUNDBOKS. It’s the loudest battery-powered speaker of them all, and you can use it both indoors and outdoors. It’s priced at €849 for a starter pack with both a speaker and a battery pack. We have one here at our Copenhagen HQ and can confirm that the sound is supreme!

3. Wireless headphones and earbuds

Any work environment is bound to get noisy at times, especially if you work in an open-plan office, or a co-working space. There’s also the issue of privacy; you don’t want to eavesdrop on your colleagues.

A pair of noise-canceling ear gear can be the lifesaver you need, and wireless ones can help make you and your working experience all the more seamless.

The best wireless and noise-canceling headphones out there are, in our opinion, definitely the Sony WH-1000XM3. Background noises of any kind, everything from co-worker conversations to blaring traffic, will completely disappear. The headphones are comfortable to wear even for extended periods, and they come with a strong battery life of up to 30 hours of continuous playback. Priced at $349.99.

For earbuds, we recommend Bose’s QuietControl 30 which you can buy for $299.95. The lightweight, contoured neckband is perfect for wearing around the office ensuring that you don’t have to worry about your earbuds dangling or falling down. Even though they’re in-ears, Bose has mastered the ‘plugs’ to such a high level that you won’t feel any discomfort with them – even after a long day’s work.

4. Wireless charging

Wireless charging, otherwise known as inductive charging, is a pretty recent phenomenon. It uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects, for example, your phone and an inductive surface.

But as we have many brands of devices, so there will be systems to charge them. That’s why we’ve found a brilliant, almost futuristic solution that can help entire offices get rid of power cables.

Wi-Charge uses a beam of infrared light – that’s right, light! – to deliver wireless power to multiple devices up to 10 feet away. It works with smart speakers, smart locks, smart screens, video surveillance, and of course smartphones.

One of the biggest barriers many people have with their smart devices is their battery life and trying to find a nearby outlet. Wi-Charger eliminates all of that and even amps up the experience by making sure more than one person can take advantage of it at the same time.

Wi-Charge has won numerous innovation awards recently, but they’re still only in beta. The reason we mention them is to underline how rapidly the technology is evolving, and how far it can take you both as a consumer and company. Why get solo charger surfaces when you can get the whole office covered?

5. Wireless control

What do we even mean by that? Well, wouldn’t it be nice if you had one central button for a lot of different wireless actions?

Enter flic, the wireless device you didn’t know you needed that will make your life a lot easier.

This nifty silicone Bluetooth button can be programmed to trigger an abundance of different actions when you push it; things you’d normally have to do on the device itself. Want to take a picture with your smartphone when it’s far away? Click the flic. Play, pause or skip to the next track? Click the flic.

The several programmable actions, such as single and double click, meaning that you can set up multiple commands for the tiny button. You could have one command for your morning alarm clock, one for your smart lighting system to turn on, and so much more!

Cables, begone! It’s time to embrace buttons.

      <div

6. Wireless screens

For those that want more freedom to roam when presenting, or the ability to connect to a display from across the room, a standard HDMI cable simply won’t cut it. In this digital age with more and more wireless aids, why not try a wireless screen sharing solution like Airtame too?

Airtame lets you wirelessly connect to any projector, screen, TV or large monitor and enables you to mirror the display on your laptop, tablet or smartphone. Whereas a lot of solutions on the market work seamlessly with one type of users, for example, either Mac or Windows, Airtame is cross-platform, meaning it works with MacOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, and Chromebook.

Our always-on support team often respond to questions that are conjured out of fake news concerning wireless screen mirroring. To set the record straight, and alleviate the most common pain points of our customers, we’re here to debunk the myths.

1. Plugging in a cable is less complicated

We don’t think so. Haven’t you ever been in a corporate meeting or a study project presentation where the presenter had to detangle a spaghetti monster of cables? The frustration of having to detangle cables, find suitable adapters or having to set up early to test is common. Setting up a wireless screen sharing solution may require a few additional steps, but once completed, it works both quicker and easier because you only have to click one button.

2. Picture quality is poor

That depends on the device. It’s true that for the best video streaming quality, a cabled connection is better. In most business or education environments though, heavy video streaming is not as important, if at all. Perhaps you’re experiencing delay rather than poor quality, and this is quite normal. A small amount of delay will not interfere with your work or presentation, and it doesn’t mean that the quality is bad. Everything has delay, even HDMI cables, but with a cabled connection it’s less than what a human would likely be able to detect. The average reaction time for humans to a visual stimulus is 0.25 seconds, and delay is generally below that. Delay is mostly dependent on the network, so if the network is fast, your wireless solution probably is too.

3. It requires something to be attached to the computer

No, not always. Some solutions, like ClickShare, have stuck to a more traditional way with devices also attached to the computer, maybe because it felt more intuitive earlier on. But more and more software solutions that use the wireless hardware already built in to the laptop or mobile device have surfaced. Like Airtame 2, that means you only need a receiving device.

4. Wireless screen mirroring uses Bluetooth

Nope, that’s not possible. Bluetooth only transmits very little data per second, not enough for screen mirroring.

5. A good internet connection is a good network for wireless screen mirroring

That’s not necessarily the case. When we mirror screens wirelessly, it stays within our network and never reaches the internet. Think of the internet as one big network and your network as a smaller, local one. Screen mirroring quality is mainly based on your network’s performance, and Airtame 2 supports both WiFi and Ethernet.

Generally speaking, Airtame 2 is not very “bandwidth hungry”, as our optimized streaming uses only very little bandwidth. Dropouts or long responsive times will however have an impact as this will cause the image to freeze or jump.

What will classrooms look like in the future? Julie Smith, aka The Techie Teacher, gives us her predictions

As I sit back and reflect on the last thirteen years I have been working in the elementary education field it blows my mind how much schooling has changed and continues to rapidly evolve. The traditional classroom pictured below in which individual desks are in rows facing the front of the room is becoming obsolete.

As education strives to become less teacher-centered, classroom teachers are ditching traditional teaching practices and classroom set-ups for more student-centered approaches. The trend of flexible seating is becoming increasingly popular in which students can choose where to sit and have more opportunity for movement throughout the day. I recently created a video, Classroom Cribs, in which a second-grade teacher took me on a tour of several different classrooms in her school. Click HERE to see how today’s classrooms are being set up.

Flexible seating

Gone are the days in which the teacher stands in front of the room lecturing and having students absorb information from a textbook. Chalkboard and marker boards have been replaced with interactive boards, document cameras or projectors. All of these changes help promote personalized learning experiences and engage students in a more collaborative learning environment as they work together to explore academic concepts.

Shy and reserved students now are capable of participating in classroom activities thanks to a variety digital tools and apps that allow for anonymous interaction, typed responses as well as recorded videos that can be created in a private atmosphere. Students with attention issues are having their needs met by having interactive, personalized lessons delivered straight to their working area, available within an arm’s reach, thanks to digital devices.

Educational technology has made its way into classrooms and is providing rich learning experiences and opportunities when used effectively. What was once a problem of not having enough access to technology in schools is morphing into not having enough professional development for teachers to keep up with the latest technological advances that are needed to equip children for their future.

There has been a shift in more digitized lessons which provide more opportunities for differentiation. However, I am a huge advocate of what is known as “blending learning” in which educators incorporate traditional teaching practices with web-based learning. As children are growing up with technology both at home and at schools it has been reported that a deterioration of their motor skills has resulted due to too much touch-screen time and very little time spent learning how to hold a writing utensil. Moderation and variety are key for classrooms of all ages and abilities.

Practically every study circulating around the internet reports that future employers will be looking for certain skills that pertain to what educators know as “The Four C’s”: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving. Therefore, we have seen coding and programming make its way into the classroom, even in the primary grades, to help facilitate critical thinking and problem-solving.

Augmented reality and virtual reality are appearing in more and more classrooms to bring real-life learning experiences to students that they would never grasp just by reading a textbook. 3D printing in the classroom has exploded as students are learning how to design and print models that can help solve problems or simply bring concepts to life in the palm of their hand. Students are being exposed and expected to use collaborative workspaces like Google Drive, OneDrive and other digital tools to work together in a digital environment. STEM/STEAM and project-based learning are becoming increasingly popular as well to help our students understand what it means to be an engineer.

Today’s children are beginning to create an online presence at a very early age. Therefore it is crucial that educators and parents reinforce the importance of what it means to be a responsible digital citizen. Curriculum for digital citizenship is making its way into the educational setting and continues to expand. Cyberbullying, online safety, digital privacy, digital security, digital reputation as well as self-image & identity are among the many topics that are being addressed in today’s classrooms.

With all of these advances happening in education it is vital that educators embrace these changes to prepare their students for what lies ahead. Aside from academic concepts, students need to learn, practice and master skills that will mold them into successful communicators, collaborators, critical thinkers, problem solvers and creators. After all, educators and parents have the important job of preparing students for their future jobs–jobs that haven’t yet even been invented.

Enter Graduateland

This is where Graduateland comes into play. Graduateland is Europe’s largest career portal for students and graduates. We met up with Frederik Ferbing, In-House Legal & Office Manager, for a chat about the company, their visions and how AIRTAME has made life easier for them.

What is Graduateland all about?

Graduateland is about making students and graduates meet employers. We provide a system to let universities create their own career portals and we help students and graduates find jobs. In short, Graduateland facilitates contact between students and employers.

Graduateland has been matching students and employees since 2010. The company actually started as a bachelor thesis, which was awarded the Danish equivalent to a D.

Now, 5 years and thousands of career connections later, they clearly proved their professors wrong. With a solid blend of technical people and a talented sales team, they have climbed to the top of Europe’s market for career portals.

What do you see being Graduateland’s main opportunities?

We still have a very strong focus on Europe. We have the Danish market and are pretty solid in Sweden. The next focus areas for us will be Germany and the Baltics, which are two very interesting areas.

The first geographical expansion came last year when Graduateland increased their presence in the Swedish market by opening their first office abroad in Stockholm.

How are you looking into expanding and growing?

Since the beginning of 2015, we have focused on expanding the content of the portal. By improving the content, we can make users stay longer on our network and conquer markets.

In a company with two offices and almost 30 employees, a lot of meetings are naturally held every day. Therefore, making the meetings flow more seamlessly, can allow Graduateland to save a lot of time and money.

What kind of meetings do you have during a regular day?

The meetings at Graduateland are very different. We have a lot of internal staff and strategy meetings. Besides that we have a lot of customers coming in, especially larger clients that need help with graduate programs.

Therefore it is important for us to have a big meeting room we can do presentations in but also sit small groups of people working on projects.

How has it changed since you installed AIRTAME?

Since we started using AIRTAME for meetings we have saved a lot of time. Making computers connect to the TV is a lot more time consuming than you would think. AIRTAME makes it easy.

It always involves some risk when you let your meetings rely on something quite new and unknown. Especially in meetings with customers who aren’t familiar with the technology. But that has not been an issue so far.

The reactions we have had on AIRTAME have been really positive. Especially the easy accessibility is a big bonus. It is very easy for people to come in, download the software and get started. It has been fun to observe how easily people can work with the product. It takes very little to no training and people just get it.

Because all meetings are different in style and content an adaptive solution that runs hassle-free is key to letting the meetings run smoothly and efficiently. Therefore Graduateland has come to appreciate the different work modes of the AIRTAME that let you enhance the performance for the specific task that needs to be done.

AIRTAME makes it easy to have a meeting. The different modes you can work in (work, presentation, video, manual) makes it very easy to switch from your slides to a video presentation. That is one of the best things about AIRTAME.

AIRTAME is an excellent meeting tool.

If you don’t have AIRTAME yet, but you’re interested in changing the way you and your colleagues work and collaborate, send us a note. We can help you work more efficiently, and rid your office of those pesky, unsightly cables, just like we did with Graduateland.

We want to hear about how you’re using AIRTAME in your office. If you’re up for a quick chat, then let us know! Maybe we’ll make a video about your company.
