Like most organizations, this past year has not been an average one for us. Despite the challenges, we’ve continued to create new features for our users and new milestones for our company. Take a look below to see some of our most exciting highlights from 2021.

Introducing OneDrive Video and Dropbox Video to Airtame Cloud

Video is a powerful communication tool, and that’s why we made sure to add support for OneDrive Video and Dropbox Video this year, increasing our supported video platforms. (Which also includes YouTube!) With each of these apps, you can choose to have the same video play on a loop or plan for a playlist of videos to be shown at specific times with Scheduled Content.

Having permanently remote team members might be non-traditional, but it’s certainly on the rise. We go through the benefits as well as the struggles - and how Airtame taps into it

It might come as a surprise to some companies, but remote workers actually add a ton of value to a team. Furthermore, reports suggest that remote-friendly companies even have 25% less turnover than a more traditionally structured company.

Both at Airtame and further afield, remote work is more often than not structured within product or engineering teams. We’re not averse to thinking of such a policy for other departments, we just haven’t got there yet. Still, we’re proud to say that we have several remote workers as part of the Airtame team and due to that benefit from a more diversified workforce.

But not all companies think that way. Having remote workers can be intimidating because it requires employers to rethink management structures. And while it’s probably true that not all businesses find it advantageous to have a full-scale remote operation, building an effective remote team infrastructure does have major benefits that should be considered.

What is remote work?

There are essentially two types; permanently remote team members, versus workers that work remotely every once in a while. The definition of remote work stays the same, however, whatever the scale of the work policy. In this article, we define remote workers as those who work at least three days a week remotely.

Remote work is a situation where one or more employees mainly work from another location than the office and communicate by email, telephone, Slack, etc. rather than face-to-face. This means that a workplace has to adapt communication and management methods in order to stay in touch with remote workers and make sure they’re not left out of important conversations, and feel just as much a part of the team as those congregated in an office.

Another perk of remote work is that it allows employees to work outside of a traditional office space and be based in a different city or even a different country – or even just from home. It’s founded on the idea that work doesn’t have to be done in a specific work environment for things to get done properly.

The advantages of remote working

Flexibility. That’s really the main point worth mentioning. Most work done today is 100% digital, and that means we should be able to do it from wherever – yet that’s often not the case. Giving employees the possibility of doing their work from a location of their choosing will ensure a more enthusiastic workforce with a happier work-life balance.

Remote workers might even see this opportunity as a reward for doing a good job and thus feel more motivated to excel further.

Less turnover and fewer office costs are of course valuable perks as well, but we think it’s first and foremost about ensuring an employee’s wellbeing.

A few more pros – acquiring top, specialized talent in one location can be hard; it gives the company a more varied, international perspective; it can help sow the seeds for future business development – and opening new offices.

The downsides to remote working

On management’s part, remote working requires a lot of re-structuring. Not only that, remote working is mostly based on trust and in the faith that an employee gets the work done and structures their time appropriately to finish projects on time. Whether the employee needs a work permit or social security papers will fall upon management to figure out, for example.

If the trust and right means of communication aren’t in place, the remote workers will feel disengaged very quickly and management will not get the most out of that employee.

There’s also the strain and toll on the employee themselves. Even though remote working sounds like a bit of a dream scenario, in reality, it can be quite stressful because the employee might feel that they’re never ‘off’ or have to stay in touch at all times.

If no policies are in place to support remote workers, these employees by default can’t bring the same value to the table as their in-house colleagues.

Airtame’s remote infrastructure

Airtame currently has little less than 100 employees, five of them full-time remote workers. About one-third of the engineers work remotely several weeks each quarter, and several other teams enjoy the flexibility of semi-remote work throughout the year – although not as frequently as the engineering team.

For that to work, we have a couple of guidelines we try to follow. I conferred with Attila Sükösd, one of Airtame’s founders and semi-remote workers, on what those guidelines are.

“When hiring candidates (especially full-time remote workers), we put extra emphasis on communication as we’ve found that they need us to be more proactive for them to stay engaged,” Attila noted.

We also try to bring in people as much as possible for social events during the year, just as we onboard them on-site, so they can meet their co-workers in person and form a more personal relationship.

Attila continues: “Once the onboarding process is complete, we sync remote workers and the team up on a daily basis through standup sessions (a roll-call or daily scrum where everyone relays their projects and activities).”

How to establish a successful remote team infrastructure

First and foremost, being successful in this endeavor requires a lot of the individual remote worker, not just management itself. These are the two most important variables to factor in when setting up an effective remote infrastructure:

Culture: Culture isn’t just about social events and in-person gatherings, it’s about a positive tone-of-voice across all channels and platforms. Remote workers should be encouraged to speak up, ask questions, and make themselves heard just as in-house employees should be encouraged to do the same and reach out to their remote colleagues. Prioritize frequent one-on-ones between the worker and their manager over video and include remote workers in all-hands sessions.

Communication: Chat tools like Slack, Basecamp, and Favro ensure that communication is transparent and recorded, and we add in regular video conferencing. Beyond that, deadlines, check-ins, goals, and feedback will help create a stable foundation for the expected tasks. Oh, and don’t leave out remote people when important decisions are made. Everyone is equally part of the team, regardless of their location. Check out our guide to the must-have apps that make your business meetings run more smoothly.

Accommodate remote workers and get a more effective team

In a recent survey by TalentLMS, 88% answered that they would recommend a remote work career to others – and we’re all for it as well. You don’t have to go all the way and become GitHub where everyone works remotely, but supporting the right hires in what’s best for them will ultimately turn out to also be the best for your company.

Yes, there’s less traceability when you start allowing people to work remotely, and yes, you need to take some extra steps to assure you’re all aligned. In Attila’s words: “When you start trusting people to do a great job, regardless of where they’re sitting, you’ll find yourself having less of a need to “stay in control” and micromanage your team.”

Happier team = better work. It’s a win/win for everyone.

How does WiFi work? Why is it called WiFi? This list of baffling WiFi facts will enlighten you

The post 15 things you didn’t know about WiFi appeared first on Airtame.

What is your home without WiFi? How about your place of work? The airport? WiFi is a thing we almost take for granted these days, yet it’s one of the few things we can’t live without.

We’re big fans of WiFi. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since WiFi, just like Airtame, is a cable killer. But what do you actually know about WiFi? Take a look at all of these awesome WiFi facts we’ve compiled and check if you’re up to date.

1. WiFi could be older than you are

The group that would develop IEEE 802.11, later marketed as WiFi, met up to discuss the shape of the invention in September 1990. That’s almost 30 years ago.

2. The name doesn’t actually mean anything

You might have heard of the IEEE 802.11, but if not, here’s a recap: IEEE 802.11 refers to the set of standards that define communication for wireless local area networks.

IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The number 802.11 refers to the methods and protocols of sending network information without any of the annoying cables. In short, it’s pretty geeky stuff.

It’s not a very catchy name, so with the help of a brand-consulting firm, the technology was instead marketed as ‘Wi-Fi’ in 1999. WiFi doesn’t actually mean anything, but we can all agree it’s a lot easier to remember. It is not, as commonly thought, an abbreviation for “Wireless Fidelity.”

The original term was ‘Wi-Fi’ with a hyphen, but like most hyphenated words, the use of the punctuation mark dissipates in time when the phrase is taken into common parlance. We like WiFi, but if you’re a bigger fan of Wi Fi or wifi, you’re (wi)fine too!

3. There are more than 9 billion WiFi devices in the world

It was estimated that more than 9 billion WiFi-enabled devices would be in use worldwide at the end of 2017. That number is likely a lot higher now, just a year later. But it makes sense. Just think about the different devices you have – and you probably have more than one.

4. WiFi uses radio waves

Let’s start with the basics. WiFi is a technology that uses radio waves to transfer information from one electronic device to the other. It’s what makes it possible for your computer to access the internet – without cables, which is the best fact of them all to us.

5. WiFi is very susceptible to interference

There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to stream a movie that keeps buffering, right?

The drop in your signal strength could be caused by interference. WiFi uses radio waves to send a signal, but they often bump paths with other radio waves at similar frequencies. With 9 billion WiFi devices in use, that’s no surprise.

Some of the sources that cause interference with WiFi networks include smart TVs, microwaves, cellphones, Bluetooth-enabled devices or even a fish tank. Different barriers may also cause interference, but whereas wood isn’t too bad, metal is sure to stop your signal.

6. Reduce interference by unplugging other devices

Your WiFi likes to be the only power in play, at least when it comes to interference.

Reduce interference by turning off and unplugging electronic devices such as TVs, Bluetooth devices, printer, baby monitors – and that microwave of yours as well! You could also change channels on your wireless network or move your WiFi closer to the computer.

Read more about how to improve your WiFi connection when using Airtame.

7. The best WiFi blocker is YOU

Water is a great signal blocker. Seeing as you’re made up of 75% water, if you’re sitting between your router and your computer, your body can significantly lower the strength of your WiFi signal. Good thing you’re not made of metal though because as we specified above, metal is a better blocker than both wood and water.

8. Doughnut-shaped signals are a thing

If you have an antenna on your router, the radio frequency energy that radiates from it looks a lot like a doughnut. In reality, you can’t really see a doughnut protruding from your router, but the thought of a doughnut-shaped energy field sounds delicious, right?

9. WiFi frequencies are different

WiFi transmits at frequencies of 2.4GHz or 5GHz and the frequencies for WiFi are much higher than those for cellular transmission. Higher frequencies, in short, mean that signals can carry more data.

Generally speaking, you give up range in exchange for more data, and that’s amazing if you care about digital signage. What would you choose?

10. WiFi is more important than breakfast

Speaking of doughnuts, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So our parents have told us. Red Roof Inn, the US hotel chain, conducted a survey together with Research+Data Insights that asked 800 economy travelers how important different amenities are to them.

The survey concluded that in-room WiFi is more important to travelers than good location, parking or even complimentary breakfast. 80% of the travelers even stated that they would feel more amicable towards a hotel if complimentary WiFi is included.

So if you plan to open a hotel any time soon, remember that high-speed complimentary WiFi will convince guests easier than oceanview or a tasty brunch.

11. There are several different kinds of WiFi

Alright, so we taught you earlier what 802.11 means, but there are actually several other versions out there. The original is from 1997 and not in use anymore, but since then we’ve had 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, and 802.11ad.

It’s quite an alphabet soup to digest, but we can say that in general, newer versions are backwards compatible with older versions, but not the other way round. For newer versions, there are several things to consider such as speed, range, and cost.

12. WiFi originated in Hawaii

Well, sort of at least. Not everyone agrees with this fact, but the fact still remains that an early predecessor of WiFi was launched in 1971 in Hawaii and was called The ALOHAnet. It was a pioneering computer networking system developed at the University of Hawaii.

Two decades later, NCR Corporation and AT&T Corporation invented WaveLAN, which is considered the true precursor to WiFi. In 1997, the first version of IEEE 802.11 wireless protocol was released.

While we agree that there’s some controversy surrounding this fact, we don’t have anything bad to say about the name ALOHAnet.

13. Lithuania has the fastest WiFi

You probably wouldn’t have guessed that, right? Well, according to Rotten Wifi, Lithuania has the fastest WiFi in the world at 16.6 Mbps as per November 2016. The Baltic region country tops the list over Singapore (15.1), Switzerland (13.8), Denmark (12), and the United Kingdom (11.7). The United States ranked 19th.

14. IoT and WiFi aren’t a perfect match

The Internet of Things or simply IoT is the concept of connecting all things in the world to the internet. For some IoT applications like in-house energy management, surveillance or home appliances, WiFi works just fine.

But that’s not the case with all IoT applications. Standard WiFi (based on 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) has some limitations in both range and energy efficiency. So in home environments or campuses where there are power outlets for all IoT applications, WiFi is still a go-to choice.

Other areas such as outdoors will require a more IoT-friendly connectivity. But who knows, maybe that’s already underway?

15. Free WiFi for all EU citizens could be happening

WiFi4EU (what a catchphrase!) is a project by the European Commission that offers vouchers worth €15,000 for EU municipalities to set up WiFi hotspots in public spaces. These include libraries, parks, and museums among others. But don’t take our word for it:

We propose today to equip every European village and every city with free wireless internet access around the main centers of public life by 2020

Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission

If EU municipalities decide to benefit from this particular EU funding, every European city could have free WiFi soon. So now you know where to travel next.

Set up success criteria

Look at the quality and financial metrics before the rollout, so you have something to compare with and analyze afterward. Outline what success looks like after deploying Airtame in your company. This will help you focus on the progress and later make the adjustment process a lot simpler.

Some things to consider could be the number of Airtame apps downloaded, support ticket count, amount of troubleshooting, and speed of setup.

If you’re able to consider what challenges or risks you might face, the rollout will go more smoothly. If your current setup is a lot different than what it will look like after rolling out Airtame, that’s something you have to bear in mind too.

Communicate the rollout (with excitement!)

Even before the rollout, you should communicate that changes will be occurring. Inform employees of the new features they will experience, how it benefits their daily work, and what improvements they can expect to see. In short, how simply it is for your colleagues to connect their laptops to a screen while in meetings.

This lets employees get more comfortable with the rollout and reduces some of the stress tied to changes in the workplace. You might even be able to recruit a few “ambassadors” that are excited about the new changes, who can communicate the benefits to their teams as well.

Explain what motivated the change, and address the fact that it takes a collective effort to manage a successful rollout. When you communicate the changes, remember to announce what exactly will change, how Airtame will help employees perform better, and what they should expect in every situation where Airtame is used.

Configure your setup

Consider who should have administrative rights and who should be regular users in your organization. Many office environments have clients coming and going who need to present material on displays as well, so make sure you’re prepared for guests.

Display simple connection instructions on the Homescreen, personalized for your convenience. That way, using Airtame in your organization quickly becomes common knowledge both for employees coming in every day and outside visitors who need easy guidelines at a glance.

You can’t be sure what device your guests are using or what IT regulations they must adhere. If your guests aren’t allowed to download external programs such as the Airtame App, they can use the guest app, downloaded or hosted on a local memory stick.

As the IT admin, you’ll want to set up administrative rights for yourself but perhaps other individuals as well. It could be for employees who need to be able to access and update content while you’re on vacation.

To make the process of updating content easier, have an internal forum where content updates can be discussed so relevant administrators know what to display.

Start training

To better understand how Airtame works, we suggest doing live demonstrations on how to connect and stream so your colleagues quickly become familiar with the product. We also suggest sharing this ‘What is Airtame?’ video with the entire company, which shows you how easy Airtame is to use.

Add an extra layer of security

You can get access to user rights in the Cloud. If you want extra security in your office environment to make sure screen content gets an additional layer of protection, set up PIN-Code Connect and Password Protection.

With PIN Code Connect, only users watching the TV can connect and start streaming. Each time they want to stream, they have to enter a randomized 4-digit passcode. Password Protection ensures that settings for a particular or all devices are locked so no one can change them or the content.

In the Airtame Cloud, you can invite other users to join the Cloud account you’ve set up. In the Cloud, you’re able to update the devices in bulk, edit individual setting as well as update digital signage content.

Offer continuous support

If you have an IT admin, make sure this person has been identified as the “trainer”, who can help onboard the rest of the employees and be the designated helper if issues should occur. This person should provide ongoing information on updates or other functionalities to help the rest of the staff achieve the full potential of Airtame.

Get started with digital signage

Even if you haven’t used digital signage as a means of communication before, digital signage is likely something your office can benefit from.

Use your screens to show an image, website or custom dashboard when no one is streaming to Airtame. This is also a great way to greet potential visitors to your office, with personalized backgrounds on your standby screens, and simple instructions to follow when you are ready to get going and start presenting.

And then there’s more! Our recent update gives you access to four app integrations that will prove useful for digital signage in the office as well for greater functionality and aesthetics.

Use Trello for smarter team collaboration, display artful imagery for inspiration or set up world clocks for other office branches.

Analyze and adjust

Usually, when you roll out a new technology, the hardest part is getting people onboard. Once they’ve seen how Airtame can help them work more effectively, all that’s left to do is keep an eye on how you can better the product for your environment.

Keep working with all employees and hearing what they have to say about the new product that they’re now using on a daily basis. We suggest actively soliciting feedback from employees on how to improve the experience and even sharing this with Airtame to improve the product itself.

Identify areas of improvements as you start using Airtame. Is there anything you’re missing in your environment, any product development you would like us to focus on building? Don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know how we can help you work smarter.

Whether you’re the IT admin, junior accountant, or procurement manager, you need some convincing arguments to throw your boss’ way when it comes to purchasing new tech gear. Not only do you need to bring them around to the value of the new tech for the business, you need to convince them it’s worth the budget. If you’ve heard of us, enjoy what we offer and would like your company to buy Airtame 2 and roll out the best in class screen sharing and AV solution, this article is for you.

Airtame 2 is a platform-agnostic wireless HDMI solution. It works great for your daily meeting room setups. Besides that, you have the option of showing custom content and digital signage from app integrations such as Trello, Unsplash, Google Slides and World Clock.

The right tools can take the hassle away from meeting room equipment troubles and digital signage problems. That’s what Airtame 2 does. Have a look at these arguments why Airtame 2 increases productivity and simplifies office routines.

Once you’ve convinced your boss, let’s talk!

1. Unlock better meetings

37% of employee time is spent in meetings, and a great deal of that time is taken up by figuring out equipment and connections. Meeting room equipment shouldn’t take focus away from productivity, yet that’s often the case.

Having Airtame 2 in meeting room environments helps bring focus and concentration. Just connect Airtame 2 to your screen, download the Airtame app and you’re ready to go. It’s easy to configure and customize, and it looks great sitting idle too. It gives the workplace better flow without the inconvenience of regular setups.

Forget spinning monitors around so others can see the screen. Forget hooking up cables and other devices, and tripping over and breaking them. Forget worrying about what hardware visitors or team members from outside the office utilize – Airtame 2 works with all.

2. Low cost

In many businesses, buying new and fancy tech equipment is an action of rarity, one that comes with a tight budget. Airtame 2 is cheaper than most competitors with a starting price of only $499 but offers the same or more features. Check out some of the comparison articles we’ve written about similar products versus Airtame 2. Minimize costs without having to settle.

3. No nonsense, risk-free 30-day trial policy

Don’t hesitate to buy Airtame 2 if you’re still unsure it’s the right fit for your business. If you end up not liking it after the 30-day trial period, you can return it for whatever reason. We provide a full cash refund or free replacements in the case of damaged or faulty items.

The reason for providing a no nonsense 30-day trial is that we want you to test the product and the features we offer to make sure you’re making the right decision that suits your needs.

4. Custom digital signage

There are several advantages to digital signage. Influence customers, potential customers, and co-workers. We understand the value of employees being updated with the latest information and knowledge.

With the latest firmware update, we offer app integrations that will help your business get the most out of screens when no one is streaming to them. Currently, Airtame supports team collaboration tool Trello, beautiful imagery by Unsplash, presentational slides with Google Slides and an overview of current local times with World Clock.

Welcome guests with the perfect message and place information where visiting customers are sure to notice it. Changing it is easy and can be done remotely.

5. Always-on support

Time is money. So goes the old saying, and we know it to be true. We value your time, and that’s why we have immediate support via email, chat or call anytime you need it.

Problems before a meeting? Our current answer rate is within three minutes, so even emergencies in the here and now can be solved quickly, meaning you can get on with your business.

6. Reduce support tickets by 80%

Because Airtame 2 is simple to set up and use, your tech support department will no longer drown in support tickets. It’s easy to update and manage devices from the cloud, even if you’re not on site.

In fact, the number of support tickets can be reduced significantly after deploying Airtame. When Lake Superior College added Airtame to their classrooms, IT admins noticed that they now have 75-80% fewer support tickets.

7. Simple overview

Airtame is a wireless HDMI solution with many management options that come in handy at any office. Whether you have one or many screens, using Airtame 2 sets a strong precedent for solid overviews and maintenance with the Airtame Cloud. Display exactly the kind of content you want and change it whenever.

8. Cut the cables

We spend so much time and effort making our meeting rooms look smart and nice, only to go spoil it with ugly mounds of connection cables left on the table. It leaves you a bad impression on external guests, and frustrates colleagues.

Fortunately, this is where Airtame 2 really steps up. No more cables! You don’t have to detangle a bunch of input cables trying to find the right one to fit your laptop, and there’s no “extra” device needed. Just connect to Airtame via the app, and you’re all set. The app also allows for easy access when guests are visiting.

      <div
         class="air-image  air-image--large"

9. Ease of use in any business

We designed Airtame 2 to take away some of the chaos in a hectic work environment. It’s up and running in just a few minutes with instructions on how to use it right there on the screen. Our solution even comes with personalized on-screen instructions in almost every language.

It’s simple to use and reliable in all situations, and your staff doesn’t have to be tech-savvy individuals or part of the IT department to know how it works. It’s as easy and intuitive as flicking on a light switch.

Go for equipment that works simply, yet effectively. Go for a stable, supportive environment for entrepreneurs. Go for seamless integration and an overall improved experience at work.

Are you ready to buy Airtame 2? Check our pricing model here or book a demo today to get started. We look forward to having you onboard.
