Like most organizations, this past year has not been an average one for us. Despite the challenges, we’ve continued to create new features for our users and new milestones for our company. Take a look below to see some of our most exciting highlights from 2021.

Introducing OneDrive Video and Dropbox Video to Airtame Cloud

Video is a powerful communication tool, and that’s why we made sure to add support for OneDrive Video and Dropbox Video this year, increasing our supported video platforms. (Which also includes YouTube!) With each of these apps, you can choose to have the same video play on a loop or plan for a playlist of videos to be shown at specific times with Scheduled Content.

Looking for a clutter-free cable environment? How about a stable, platform-agnostic way to stream? Maybe you haven’t even considered yet that there’s a wireless streaming device for you out there.

Wireless streaming devices are a booming new market, and acquiring the right product can help boost a productive environment for schools, business and other organizations. But finding the right device can be a nightmare. That’s why we’ve made a guide for anybody looking to buy a wireless streaming device for your workplace.

We’ve compiled a list of 12 questions to ask yourself before buying a wireless streaming device. We find that these are the most essential questions, which take into account your use case, your network environment, the level of maintenance you’re looking for, as well as the price point and installation efforts.

Do you need a wireless streaming device? Define your use case

1) Business or leisure?

The first thing you have to ask yourself is, are you looking for a media player to complete your home entertainment system? Or are you looking for a quality, reliable screen sharing solution that’s going to make you king of the conference room or classroom? (yeah, that’s a thing).

If you are looking for a media player, streaming devices like Chromecast, Roku, and Amazon Fire Stick are what you need. These devices have features designed for making your Netflix and chill days more relaxing.

If you need something for your office or classroom, however, these media players are missing features that make them suitable for work environments, especially if you want wireless streaming in every meeting room or classroom. Professional screen sharing solutions, like Airtame, offer you options for easy integration with your corporate network.

If you find yourself in neither of those two categories, chances are you’re looking for a device that serves just one traditional purpose in a wireless environment. With gaming consoles, live camera feeds and external digital signage, you want a wireless HDMI transmitter, and that’s different than a screen sharing or streaming solution.

2) What’s your budget for establishing a wireless streaming device and setup in your organization?

With a cabled connection, you get an instant picture with no delay, but it also comes with connectivity challenges and less control. A wireless solution is not just freeing yourself of cable-clutter and gaining easy connectivity from several devices. It comes with better overview, cloud management and access to digital signage.

If you do decide on a wireless streaming device, the primary functional device is rarely the only cost. What about all the other rooms where a wireless streaming solution is necessary? For many products on the market, installation and maintenance costs are high. Add to that monthly subscriptions on applications, rag mounts, antennas and trays, and you could still have a long way to go.

If you’re a school with a tight budget or any organization looking to keep costs down, you need a single-pay, full-service solution like Airtame.

3) Which devices do I want to stream from?

Are you a home user with a passion for sleek Apple products? Or do you prefer your trusty Windows and Android devices? If you know for certain that you’d only use one platform, you can safely choose a wireless streaming device that’s designed for your specific platform.

It’s not applicable to every situation though. Home use devices with software designed specifically for certain hardware types, like Chromecast or AppleTV, are not recommendable for usage in a business environment.

In an environment with multiple hardware devices, you need a platform-agnostic third-party solution that can cater to all sorts of devices and connectivities.

At school or work, people are probably using a mix of different devices. In this case, you need a cross-platform solution. That is, a solution that works across different devices, like Mac, Windows, Linux, Chromebook, and yes, even iOS and Android.

Most professional-grade wireless devices offer support for Mac, Windows, and iOS and Android. Airtame, however, is the only solution that offers support for Linux and Chromebooks, so everyone in your office or school is taken care of.

You should also ask yourself if you want to stream from multiple devices to your TV screen or projector, or if you need to stream from one computer to multiple screens.

4) What display hardware are you using?

At this point in time, all wireless streaming products available on the market are made for use on displays. But there are slight differences to the products you might need to consider, depending on the type of display hardware you’re using.

What is it you need to stream to? A TV, a projector, a touchscreen whiteboard? Keep in mind that some streaming devices do not easily mount in tight spaces. And some devices are too heavy to hang from the ceilings.

For projectors or TVs with little space around them, you’ll need to look into a smaller sized device that can easily fit into a projector’s cable tray or between the minimal space between the TV and wall. If you’re using a touchscreen whiteboard, you probably need something small as well that can move around with the whiteboard wherever you roll it.

Just because you have a touchscreen, doesn’t mean you intend to use its functions. If you do, you’ll need something that also enables touchscreen functions. There are ways to work around it, though. Those functions could also be implemented by drawing on, say, an iPad, which then streams content directly to your screen.

5) What content do you want to show via your wireless streaming device?

What kind of content is it you want to show on the TV or projector on a daily basis? Do you mainly need to show still images or do you need dynamic pictures as well, even real-time footage? Do you want audio to be included? There are so many questions to consider when looking for a wireless streaming device, especially with what it is you want to present.

The source of the information is also an important factor, so think about where your content comes from. If you’re showing content directly from the internet, for example, movies, Chromecast could be a good choice for you.

If you’re like most people in an office or school, your resource code doesn’t reside on the internet, it comes from your laptop. Odds are that you need to share your work directly from your favorite applications, like Excel, PowerPoint, Invision, or maybe even your company’s or school’s website.

Streaming from mobile devices is a limited experience in general. Get the full experience by screen mirroring content from your laptop.

      <div
         class="air-image  air-image--large"

6) Who will be using the wireless streaming device?

Different users are sure to have different needs and expectations for their streaming device. We like to put users into three categories; employees, customers and guests.

The employees are the ones in control of the content being shown. It could be teachers, IT admins or any administrator that monitors displays or updates content. If one set of employees or teachers are using the streaming device exclusively, you likely don’t need an open solution.

The customers are the ones not directly involved with or unable to manipulate content. That’s students at an educational institution, the audience of a presentation or travelers in airports looking at digital signage. Although they cannot manipulate content, they still benefit from it.

The guests are probably one-time users. Any guest or visitor should be able to stream without any prior training because you want their experience to be smooth and easy. For that to happen, you need a device that can accommodate a guest network for external use for when visitors drop by.

Your network environment and maintenance

7) Is your environment ready for a wireless streaming device?

Wireless streaming is undeniably convenient and saves time and effort in your daily work life. A factor to take into account is the extra load that wireless streaming will put on your WiFi network. Poor and slow WiFi will, of course, result in a disappointing streaming experience.

Aside from doing your part to improve your network, you should also look for a wireless streaming device that has flexible network integration options. Most professional solutions offer an Ethernet connection option, which is very useful. Using an Ethernet connection offers extra stability since you eliminate the risk of straining your WiFi and losing streaming quality.

8) How many rooms and screens are you equipping?

This questions is centered around maintenance rather than budget. For budget, see #2.

Looking at your rooms and screens is closely tied to the content you want to show (##5). For internal digital signage such as info screens, custom background and static KPIs, Airtame is great. For external digital signage such as video content, slides and animations, you need something a little more powerful.

If you are looking for a scalable solution that you can put in all the rooms in your building or campus, you’re going to want a solution that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, and can also easily be managed remotely. You should also consider what kind of screens you’re using.

For an auditorium, you need a device that supports high-resolution images because of the giant screen. Airtame 2 does not (yet) provide 4K resolution, but ClickShare does.

For a conference room, you might want a solution with Skype or other types of video conferencing integrated. You can get around this by projecting your laptop screen with Skype on it via Airtame 2.

In meeting rooms, you likely have many internal users, so external reach-outs like Skype calls are not that important.

An all-in-one management tool gives you a central point for monitoring and updating your devices, and you don’t get that with all products. Airtame offers a cloud-based platform where you can manage all devices from your computer.

9) How are people connected to your existing network? (authentication method, users split on different VLANs etc?)

This question starts getting a bit more technical, but for those of you who administrate your company or school’s network, it’s an important one. It goes back to the previous question about three different kinds of users, because each user will be on a different part of the network.

You will need to make sure that everyone on your network (or networks if you have more than one) can use the streaming device easily without having to switch WiFi networks.

10) How will you physically be integrating the solution?

While it’s nice to connect directly via WiFi, that can cause some problems in certain cases, because WiFi signals sometimes lose data because of interference.

The possibility of hardwiring your device via an Ethernet adaptor gives you more stability and better transfer speed. That’s because wireless data transmitting takes more time since signals are transferred in the air.

Having a cabled connection also maximizes security, which is good for research environments or bank or other high-security environments.

There are several power solutions to consider too. Will your device need an AC Power Adapter plugged into a wall outlet, or are you good to go via the USB port on your TV? If there are no wall outlets near the installment of your device, you should check if it supports other power options.

Some wireless streaming devices support a one-cable power solution, called a Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE). It’s an adapter capable of splitting power and ethernet enables you to power your device and provide the best network connection from the same cable.

Purchase and installation

11) Who will be managing and maintaining the equipment?

Some devices are a lot easier to set up than others, and some even require a third party certified installer.

With Airtame 2, you don’t need any previous training, meaning you could cut out the middleman controlling installment and maintenance. Instructions are simple and intuitive, with support via email, phone or chat always ready if you need it. Unlike other products, it’s a simple plug-and-play solution, meaning you don’t have to bring out the power tools.

If you have an on-ground janitor who takes care of physical improvements, you are less likely to select a cloud solution that can be managed remotely. Having a cloud platform could save you time, however, which is the best solution if you have an IT admin who could even be located off-site.

12) What’s the best time to install a wireless streaming device in your organization?

Think of regular, physical developments in your organization. They require the staff to be out of office, right? How about installing or updating equipment at a school? Always best to do when the students are on holiday.

Installing an Airtame 2 takes only a few minutes and no prior training is needed, meaning you can set it up any time you choose.

If you’re worried that the wireless streaming device you’re considering will not live up to your ever-changing needs after a while, remember that just as any organization changes, Airtame does too. It’s a constant evolution of firmware/software, and a product that develops over time. Our goal is be one step ahead of demands so you don’t have to ask us to keep up.

How does WiFi work? Why is it called WiFi? This list of baffling WiFi facts will enlighten you

The post 15 things you didn’t know about WiFi appeared first on Airtame.

What is your home without WiFi? How about your place of work? The airport? WiFi is a thing we almost take for granted these days, yet it’s one of the few things we can’t live without.

We’re big fans of WiFi. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since WiFi, just like Airtame, is a cable killer. But what do you actually know about WiFi? Take a look at all of these awesome WiFi facts we’ve compiled and check if you’re up to date.

1. WiFi could be older than you are

The group that would develop IEEE 802.11, later marketed as WiFi, met up to discuss the shape of the invention in September 1990. That’s almost 30 years ago.

2. The name doesn’t actually mean anything

You might have heard of the IEEE 802.11, but if not, here’s a recap: IEEE 802.11 refers to the set of standards that define communication for wireless local area networks.

IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The number 802.11 refers to the methods and protocols of sending network information without any of the annoying cables. In short, it’s pretty geeky stuff.

It’s not a very catchy name, so with the help of a brand-consulting firm, the technology was instead marketed as ‘Wi-Fi’ in 1999. WiFi doesn’t actually mean anything, but we can all agree it’s a lot easier to remember. It is not, as commonly thought, an abbreviation for “Wireless Fidelity.”

The original term was ‘Wi-Fi’ with a hyphen, but like most hyphenated words, the use of the punctuation mark dissipates in time when the phrase is taken into common parlance. We like WiFi, but if you’re a bigger fan of Wi Fi or wifi, you’re (wi)fine too!

3. There are more than 9 billion WiFi devices in the world

It was estimated that more than 9 billion WiFi-enabled devices would be in use worldwide at the end of 2017. That number is likely a lot higher now, just a year later. But it makes sense. Just think about the different devices you have – and you probably have more than one.

4. WiFi uses radio waves

Let’s start with the basics. WiFi is a technology that uses radio waves to transfer information from one electronic device to the other. It’s what makes it possible for your computer to access the internet – without cables, which is the best fact of them all to us.

5. WiFi is very susceptible to interference

There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to stream a movie that keeps buffering, right?

The drop in your signal strength could be caused by interference. WiFi uses radio waves to send a signal, but they often bump paths with other radio waves at similar frequencies. With 9 billion WiFi devices in use, that’s no surprise.

Some of the sources that cause interference with WiFi networks include smart TVs, microwaves, cellphones, Bluetooth-enabled devices or even a fish tank. Different barriers may also cause interference, but whereas wood isn’t too bad, metal is sure to stop your signal.

6. Reduce interference by unplugging other devices

Your WiFi likes to be the only power in play, at least when it comes to interference.

Reduce interference by turning off and unplugging electronic devices such as TVs, Bluetooth devices, printer, baby monitors – and that microwave of yours as well! You could also change channels on your wireless network or move your WiFi closer to the computer.

Read more about how to improve your WiFi connection when using Airtame.

7. The best WiFi blocker is YOU

Water is a great signal blocker. Seeing as you’re made up of 75% water, if you’re sitting between your router and your computer, your body can significantly lower the strength of your WiFi signal. Good thing you’re not made of metal though because as we specified above, metal is a better blocker than both wood and water.

8. Doughnut-shaped signals are a thing

If you have an antenna on your router, the radio frequency energy that radiates from it looks a lot like a doughnut. In reality, you can’t really see a doughnut protruding from your router, but the thought of a doughnut-shaped energy field sounds delicious, right?

9. WiFi frequencies are different

WiFi transmits at frequencies of 2.4GHz or 5GHz and the frequencies for WiFi are much higher than those for cellular transmission. Higher frequencies, in short, mean that signals can carry more data.

Generally speaking, you give up range in exchange for more data, and that’s amazing if you care about digital signage. What would you choose?

10. WiFi is more important than breakfast

Speaking of doughnuts, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So our parents have told us. Red Roof Inn, the US hotel chain, conducted a survey together with Research+Data Insights that asked 800 economy travelers how important different amenities are to them.

The survey concluded that in-room WiFi is more important to travelers than good location, parking or even complimentary breakfast. 80% of the travelers even stated that they would feel more amicable towards a hotel if complimentary WiFi is included.

So if you plan to open a hotel any time soon, remember that high-speed complimentary WiFi will convince guests easier than oceanview or a tasty brunch.

11. There are several different kinds of WiFi

Alright, so we taught you earlier what 802.11 means, but there are actually several other versions out there. The original is from 1997 and not in use anymore, but since then we’ve had 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, and 802.11ad.

It’s quite an alphabet soup to digest, but we can say that in general, newer versions are backwards compatible with older versions, but not the other way round. For newer versions, there are several things to consider such as speed, range, and cost.

12. WiFi originated in Hawaii

Well, sort of at least. Not everyone agrees with this fact, but the fact still remains that an early predecessor of WiFi was launched in 1971 in Hawaii and was called The ALOHAnet. It was a pioneering computer networking system developed at the University of Hawaii.

Two decades later, NCR Corporation and AT&T Corporation invented WaveLAN, which is considered the true precursor to WiFi. In 1997, the first version of IEEE 802.11 wireless protocol was released.

While we agree that there’s some controversy surrounding this fact, we don’t have anything bad to say about the name ALOHAnet.

13. Lithuania has the fastest WiFi

You probably wouldn’t have guessed that, right? Well, according to Rotten Wifi, Lithuania has the fastest WiFi in the world at 16.6 Mbps as per November 2016. The Baltic region country tops the list over Singapore (15.1), Switzerland (13.8), Denmark (12), and the United Kingdom (11.7). The United States ranked 19th.

14. IoT and WiFi aren’t a perfect match

The Internet of Things or simply IoT is the concept of connecting all things in the world to the internet. For some IoT applications like in-house energy management, surveillance or home appliances, WiFi works just fine.

But that’s not the case with all IoT applications. Standard WiFi (based on 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) has some limitations in both range and energy efficiency. So in home environments or campuses where there are power outlets for all IoT applications, WiFi is still a go-to choice.

Other areas such as outdoors will require a more IoT-friendly connectivity. But who knows, maybe that’s already underway?

15. Free WiFi for all EU citizens could be happening

WiFi4EU (what a catchphrase!) is a project by the European Commission that offers vouchers worth €15,000 for EU municipalities to set up WiFi hotspots in public spaces. These include libraries, parks, and museums among others. But don’t take our word for it:

We propose today to equip every European village and every city with free wireless internet access around the main centers of public life by 2020

Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission

If EU municipalities decide to benefit from this particular EU funding, every European city could have free WiFi soon. So now you know where to travel next.

7. What’s the difference between Airtame and…

Google Chromecast

Airtame works with WPA2 Enterprise networks and in environments using two separate networks. Chromecast lets guests at home stream without connecting to your home WiFi.

Airtame offers a free platform for managing an unlimited number of devices from the Cloud. Chromecast does not offer a device management tool.

Chromecast can only be managed one-to-one on the local network. Airtame can be managed in bulk and via the Cloud, even from a remote location.

Airtame does 2-click screen mirroring from a computer app that works on any device. Chromecast does 6-clicks desktop casting through the Chrome browser.

If you want to easily watch movies and entertainment at home, you should buy a Chromecast.

If you want a streaming solution optimized for your professional needs, Airtame is the Chromecast alternative for businesses and schools.

ClickShare sells for a range of $1,750-$5,000, while Airtame has a scalable price tag at $299 per device that fits the budget of any business or educational institution

ClickShare requires a device plugged into your computer, while Airtame uses an application and only requires a device plugged into the TV or projector.

ClickShare lets multiple users stream to the same TV at once, while Airtame lets a user stream from one computer to multiple TV’s.

AppleTV

If you want a device agnostic option for your school or business that lets you stream wirelessly, Airtame is the Apple TV alternative for your needs.

If you only own Apple devices and want to easily watch movies and entertainment at home, you should consider the Apple TV.

Today we’ve released a new update for both the AIRTAME device and the app running on your computer. How does this benefit me? Well, we’re glad you asked.

Now you will get:

Better audio streaming

Support for hidden SSID

Support for old Apple operating systems

This update focuses on a lot of smaller features. It will improve the overall experience of streaming with AIRTAME. You could call it an intermediate update. It prepares the dongle and software for future updates.

Attila Sukosd

Better audio streaming

The last comment is something we will get back to. Let’s start with the most interesting updated features: Better audio streaming. Since we launched audio, some of you have reported some sounds cracks while streaming. We hope that you will be able to notice the improvement related to this update and we are very confident that the next update after this one will give it the last tweak.

It is no secret that it has been a tad more challenging than anticipated to deliver the quality of audio streaming we strive for. However, we have identified the last issues and we are working hard on resolving them.

Support for hidden SSID

We have also added support for hidden SSID to you guys. Hidden SSID is mostly relevant for companies but quite a few consumers have also requested this feature.

In short, hidden SSID is a secret network that does not show in your network overview. Until now, AIRTAME has not been able to connect to these. This update makes the connection run smoothly.

Check this guide on how to connect to a hidden SSID

Support for older Apple operating systems

Okay, the last major feature in this update. We have made it easier for people with older Apple operating systems to use AIRTAME by adding support for OS X 10.8 also called Mountain Lion. So if you for different reasons have been reluctant to update to Yosemite you are also welcomed into the AIRTAME family now.

To get back to Attila’s last comment: We are constantly working on improving AIRTAME. We regularly release new updates to fix bugs, add features and enhance performance. Eg. some of you have reported a report window appearing without the app actually crashing. The same goes for a few install issues on Windows. We are aware of them and the bugs will be smashed with our next update.

We are very excited about the updates that we have coming up in our the pipeline this year and look forward to share our progress with all of you. Stay tuned and keep an eye our blog.

We appreciate all the feedback we can get, so please submit your input through our forum and give us your 2 cents on how you experience the new update. Here you can also find more technical details + full changelog of the current update.

Now, go update!

So, just one thing left. Please make sure to update both your AIRTAME firmware and software to get these updates immediately. If you’re in doubt about how to do that check out these guides to update your PC software and AIRTAME firmware.

Update: Since this post was published, we’ve made major changes and improvements to Airtame’s streaming modes. We’re in the process of writing a new post on how to use these streaming modes, so we appreciate your patience! Until then, you’re very welcome to write to our Customer Experience team with any questions or comments.

We’ve come to realize that there’s no one-size fit when it comes to wireless streaming. This is why we have designed three modes for the best possible performance according to your specific use case. Each mode has it’s own unique algorithms to optimize for the perfect performances in its context and real-time environment. This is only regarding mirroring from computers to AIRTAME and not from mobile devices. If you have already updated to the latest software version you can go to AIRTAME>preferences>modes and already try it out for yourself!

This is for when you are looking for responsive actions with as little latency as possible. We’ve muted the sound, and this mode will allow you to use the larger monitor in as near real-time as possible. We recommend using this mode when you need to walk someone through a particular process, or if you need to take notes / collaborate together in real time.

Video Mode

This is for when you want to showcase something, or simply stream some media to the larger screen. It gives you a high level of fluency and quality. We’ve have purposely added a level of latency (delay) as 1) You’re not actively using your laptop and 2) Helps to build a fluid stream to create the highest stream possible.

Presentation Mode

When presenting your screen either using a keynote or powerpoint, this mode focuses on high quality while fluency is reduced to save battery whilst layering a slight delay to ensure high-quality streaming throughout. It’s a mix of the two previous modes, however, it’s perfectly tuned if you want to use the mobile applications as your presentation remote.

Mode4_manual-2 Manual Mode We wouldn’t be us, if we didn’t give you the option of ignoring all the streaming modes and to let you create your own balance. You’re able to toggle quality settings/audio and define exactly what frame rate (FPS) and level of buffering you want to have. How do I use it? Either go to preferences and adjust the different modes or use the quick selection directly from the drop-down menu. screenshots

How do I get it? You just need to have the latest update on both your computer and on your AIRTAME. The modes are only available from V.1.0 onwards. Update computer: Simply update the AIRTAME app on your computer or download the latest from here: https://airtame.com/download Update AIRTAME: Make sure your AIRTAME is connected to the internet and it will update automatically.
