Code Your Future is one such example; a non-profit organization that teaches refugees how to code in order to have better job opportunities. They’ve got locations in London, Manchester, Glasgow, and now Rome too, with more than 100 graduates so far.

Because of the many cultural backgrounds of the refugees, it’s vital that the tech they use at Code Your Future is simple, reliable, and easy to use. That’s why we’ve recently gifted them four Airtames in order for them to succeed and create a better, open learning environment.

Germán Bencci is the founder of Code Your Future. We asked Germán for a chat about cultural differences, the modern workspace, and why coding is a great place to start if you want to learn a new, high in demand skill fast.

How did Code Your Future come to be?

The refugee crisis in 2015 hit me pretty strongly. I’m from Venezuela myself, and over the past years, many of my countrymen have had to flee as well due to the political climate. So when I experienced it in Europe too, I immediately started thinking about solutions.

I think what really drove me to start Code Your Future was the fact that big tech companies made a lot of promises and pledged to have a positive impact on the crisis, yet nothing happened. That’s when I knew I had to step in and present something tangible, and it was natural to me to use tech as an enabler.

Code Your Future helps create better job opportunities for future tech employees. But why coding?

No matter their academic background or if they have one at all, many refugees find it almost impossible to get jobs other than cleaning, repairs or sewing, etc. Coding gives you a lot of other opportunities and skills that are highly sought after, but without having to spend many years training.

It doesn’t take a lot of time nor money to learn how to code, and it’s one of the very few skills that makes you likely to get a good job instantly. Coding ignores ethnicity, religions, and cultural background completely.

What fuels your mission of helping refugees code? What’s the reward?

The opportunities and networks we have access to aren’t distributed evenly in society and, consequently, there’s a lot of social inequality. Disrupting that is pure magic! Of course, meeting new people and connecting with different, rarely represented cultures is also a fantastic bonus.

I guess it’s really mostly about taking the small steps towards change that inspires people to take the same small steps themselves.

What does it take to become an innovative organization, like Code Your Future?

People! People that want to make this happen. And a good portion of determination, welcome attitude, risk-willingness, and continuous yearning for improvement.

I’d also have to add that your ego should stay out of it. Working with what we do requires you to be selfless and open in a way we rarely are today. We’re non-profit, so we simply can’t think of it as a traditional business venture.

In relation to that, what do you think tech companies should do to accommodate employees with all sorts of backgrounds?

First of all, I genuinely feel that there’s a lot of good will and intentions in the tech industry. Tech products are used by millions of different people with tons of different backgrounds, so in order to cater to them, tech companies have to understand them and embrace their differences.

I think tech companies should be aware that they still have biases and then try to let go of them. They’ll be pleasantly surprised if they go outside their comfort zone a bit more.

Employees are one thing. What do you think the modern workspace should look like?

The most important thing for a modern workspace is understanding where their workforce is coming from. The same thing that goes for, say, Italian culture isn’t always a given for people with other backgrounds.

With the proper training, an open attitude as well as transparency, companies can come a long way. It’s imperative that companies figure out exactly what kind of company they want to be. What does the hierarchy look like? What about daily communication? Are you only considering a certain personality type? And so on.

When companies do that bit of ‘soul searching’, they’ll understand what they have to do to get to where they want. And maybe if the structures that are already implemented should be disrupted.

What have you learned through the process of establishing Code Your Future?

The most amazing thing I’ve learned is definitely that people are more than willing to share knowledge, help out, and make a difference. On the other hand, it’s equally amazing how willing the refugees we meet are to learn something new.

People basically want the same thing. They want to feel part of a group, they want basic safety in life and a sense that what they do matters. I’ve found through Code Your Future that it’s all possible if we’re open and treat other religions and cultures respectfully. We can achieve so much if we just acknowledge how alike we are deep down.

What do you wish every workspace had in terms of gear?

I can only speak for Code Your Future, but I believe this is applicable for other businesses too. Everybody needs work equipment that’s easy to understand and simple to use. Dashboards and big screens, for example, can quickly give workers a summary of the company’s impact and metrics. Tools like that empower your employees to feel connected and are a conversation-starter cross-team.

Can you describe one particularly meaningful student success story?

We have so many, it’s hard to just pick one. I’ll tell you the story of Louis who fled from Cameroon and rose from homelessness to a full-time developer.

After fleeing Cameroon, Louis found himself alone on the streets of London, scrambling to get by. He lived on the streets for a full year, after which he found a job as a cleaner and simultaneously enrolled in college to learn English. With no prior experience, he was afraid Code Your Future wouldn’t accept him into the course, but I told him to apply anyway.

He graduated from Code Your Future after just a few months and landed his first full-time job as a developer immediately thereafter. He laughed and told me he could have never dreamt of a life like this before, yet here he was! That made me so happy.

We try to give people the skills to become independent in a foreign country, and it’s amazing every time we succeed. It’s possible because we teach not only coding, but also communication, and how to work in a professional environment. Louis tells me he has a new dream now: to become a full-stack developer and teach others, just like we do, how to code. I’m confident he will do just that and help those who are in the same situation he was.

How can technology, like Airtame, help improve the workspace?

One of the reasons why Airtame has helped us so much is that you can be in a room with 30 laptops and people sitting in front of their computers working but still share the same experience. Airtame creates a unified feeling where everyone can be part of the same storytelling experience.

A quality demo is something that engages the person you’re talking to. For us, it’s a lot about experimentation, as what grabs the attention of a potential lead may not work the next time around.

To start off with, it’s crucial that we highlight exactly what Airtame is, in the simplest terms possible; we explain that Airtame is a wireless streaming solution that has been designed for both business and educational environments.  Normally, the kind of people buying Airtame would include everyone from IT administrators working for multinational corporations, to primary school teachers and university directors.

Winning over such a diverse audience requires team members to be technically well-versed while also coming across as charming, flexible, and helpful.

On the one hand we need to standardize our demos so that they exhibit Airtame’s purpose in a way that is universally understandable.

At the same time we also need to be able to customize each demo, so that we can convey how Airtame will improve the specific situation of the person we’re talking to and the institution that they represent. Achieving these goals simultaneously isn’t easy, which is why we’ve developed guidelines to help us navigate each demo call.

Training for demo calls

Our sales team is primarily responsible for demo calls, and members of our customer success team assist. These teams work together closely, and each person is trained in a way so that they feel confident in delivering a slam-dunk demo. We maintain consistent high quality by listening in on each other’s calls, both for training new recruits and as a way to offer constructive feedback.

Aside from making an initial sale, the aim of the demos isn’t to only get one-off customers. It’s about planting the seed that will allow us to garner a long-term relationship. Regardless of how big or small the deal is, Airtame offers lifetime customer support. In many cases, the team member who originally conducted the call will keep in regular contact with the customer during and after the onboarding process, as a relationship will already be established. We really drill it into the minds of new recruits that they to always keep the long-term perspective in mind, rather than only looking at their role in terms of the money they help bring in.

We use Calendly so that anyone can book a demo with us through our website. Once booked, the team member with whom the call has been scheduled receives a Slack notification and an event pops us in their Google Calendar. This is all integrated with our CRM tool Pipedrive, giving us an overview of past calls, email threads, customer details, and purchases. A key part of getting new hires on board is teaching them to use and stay on top of their respective accounts.

Preparing for demo calls

A demo call is like a first date. If it goes well, there’s a world of potential ahead. If it goes badly, it’s unlikely that the other person will give us another shot at winning them over.

The first step is to understand what value means to the person on the other side of the call. We always do our research to find out about the organization’s mission, what they do, and who they work with on a regular basis. Taking ten minutes to read up on this allows us to contextualize our value.

We ask leads to describe the nature of their project in as much detail as possible when they initially book. The “project” could be anything from a traveling salesman looking to use Airtame as a portable presentation solution, to a school district looking to permanently equip 500 classrooms with Airtame.

With this in mind, the focus of the demo will be influenced by the working style of the user, pain points, future growth potential, network setup, size of the institution, and many other possible factors. We come up with a tailor-made checklist of what to highlight and what questions to ask. The goal is to focus only on the features that are most relevant to solving the prospect’s challenges at work.

Your big opener …

First impressions aren’t everything, but they do pack quite a punch. When starting a call, we avoid sounding like a robot at all costs. I try to speak to everyone as though I was meeting them in person. I ask them how they’re doing and often tell them something personal about how I joined Airtame, or about how the company got started. In just acting natural (i.e., not jumping straight into a script), it’s possible to establish rapport.

The tough part – delivering

We talk with people, not at them. No one likes a person who doesn’t let anyone else get a word in. It’s important to continuously ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of the lead’s needs and preferences. We concentrate on the “why,” both when it comes to learning about our partners, and explaining the Airtame solution. We want to convey that Airtame exists to make your professional life easier.

We take pride in not only being able to share clear and concise product knowledge, but also in our ability to communicate this to people with varying degrees of technical experience. We strive to come across as capable and helpful, providing insights tailored to each lead’s scenario. While each of us wants to have all of the knowledge bases covered, part of being human is also about not being afraid to let customers know that we don’t always have the answers.

If I’m unsure of how to best answer a question, I pause the call to ask a colleague to help confirm. No lead has ever been upset over this. Probably because they’re human too.

We are also not afraid to be clear on what Airtame can’t do, in addition to what it can, or perhaps might do in the future. We’d rather say less, making sure that all information we provide is accurate than try to oversell, overpromise or spout falsehoods in the hope of generating a sale. We avoid criticizing competitors and instead focus on how we are different.

Airtame is a living product; we stand out by constantly working on new ways to improve our product and the services we offer. The objective is long-term trust, which is ultimately the healthiest way to improve the bottom line.

Online demos are hosted through GoToMeeting, which is great for making the most of visual aids. With the screen sharing feature participants can view our presentation slides, experience how the Airtame App works, and take a tour through the Airtame Cloud platform. We use the Airtame App and Cloud platform exactly as any customer would, to demonstrate the simple user interface, and how easy it is to use Airtame.

We let these tools complement our conversation, which is the spirit of Airtame. Airtame isn’t meant to replace human communication, but rather to make it more collaborative.

We emphasize the fact that we provide free lifetime customer support, and we’re not afraid to give out individual work emails rather than a generic one. The message is that there are real people behind the product, who care enough to take the time to individually solve problems and come up with helpful suggestions.

Closing a demo call

When it comes to closing a call, we try to guide leads to make a sale, while not being pushy. People know that we, of course, need to sell the product, but they appreciate that we’re not afraid to poke fun at the overbearing salesperson stereotype. Our approach is to ask if they have any remaining questions or concerns.

We take on feedback from every inquiry and feed this into our communication strategy. Sometimes feature requests are added to our product development roadmap. The blind spots that potential customers have – related to what Airtame can or cannot do – are instrumental in generating clearer and more concise communication.

If they confirm that they’re interested in giving Airtame a go then we suggest that they start with ordering a few devices to test out. We never push anyone to proceed with a large purchase without first having had the chance to see if Airtame works in their environment.

This is where Graduateland comes into play. Graduateland is Europe’s largest career portal for students and graduates. We met up with Frederik Ferbing, In-House Legal & Office Manager, for a chat about the company, their visions and how AIRTAME has made life easier for them.

What is Graduateland all about?

Graduateland is about making students and graduates meet employers. We provide a system to let universities create their own career portals and we help students and graduates find jobs. In short, Graduateland facilitates contact between students and employers.

Graduateland has been matching students and employees since 2010. The company actually started as a bachelor thesis, which was awarded the Danish equivalent to a D.

Now, 5 years and thousands of career connections later, they clearly proved their professors wrong. With a solid blend of technical people and a talented sales team, they have climbed to the top of Europe’s market for career portals.

What do you see being Graduateland’s main opportunities?

We still have a very strong focus on Europe. We have the Danish market and are pretty solid in Sweden. The next focus areas for us will be Germany and the Baltics, which are two very interesting areas.

The first geographical expansion came last year when Graduateland increased their presence in the Swedish market by opening their first office abroad in Stockholm.

How are you looking into expanding and growing?

Since the beginning of 2015, we have focused on expanding the content of the portal. By improving the content, we can make users stay longer on our network and conquer markets.

In a company with two offices and almost 30 employees, a lot of meetings are naturally held every day. Therefore, making the meetings flow more seamlessly, can allow Graduateland to save a lot of time and money.

What kind of meetings do you have during a regular day?

The meetings at Graduateland are very different. We have a lot of internal staff and strategy meetings. Besides that we have a lot of customers coming in, especially larger clients that need help with graduate programs.

Therefore it is important for us to have a big meeting room we can do presentations in but also sit small groups of people working on projects.

How has it changed since you installed AIRTAME?

Since we started using AIRTAME for meetings we have saved a lot of time. Making computers connect to the TV is a lot more time consuming than you would think. AIRTAME makes it easy.

It always involves some risk when you let your meetings rely on something quite new and unknown. Especially in meetings with customers who aren’t familiar with the technology. But that has not been an issue so far.

Most of the classrooms are equipped with whiteboards and short-throw Epson projectors. A typical classroom on campus can fit around 30 students, but there are also designated areas for group work and auditoriums for larger audiences.

Airtame setup at Campus Vejle

Campus Vejle has installed the Airtames directly in their classroom projectors. The Airtame receives power directly from a wall plug, so it is easy to manage and configure the devices from the central IT hub without having to go to the room and turn on the device.

Network integration

Campus Vejle has two separate wireless networks. One wireless network is for students, teachers and other staff, which is protected with WPA2-Enterprise authentication. Every student and teacher has a unique username and password that they use to log on to the school WiFi.

The other network is an open guest network for people who don’t have a user account at the school to connect to.

At the moment, the Airtames are connected to the “teacher and student” network. The Airtames are wirelessly connected on the 5GHz frequency band and the second wireless antenna in the Airtame is disabled in order to reduce interference.

This ensures both good streaming performance and a secure setup, where access to the internal network is limited to students and school staff.

Campus Vejle’s network does not currently have “Multicast” or “Broadcasting” enabled on their network. This means that students and teachers connect to the screen using the IP address displayed, when no one is connected.

The plan for the future is to have the Airtames appear directly in the software menu when students and educators open the Airtame application. Our upcoming Pin Code feature will ensure that no one is able to connect to a screen if they are not in the same room.

Airtame’s new Cloud Platform

Campus Vejle was given an early preview of Airtame’s upcoming Cloud Platform, which would make it easier to manage multiple Airtames without ever leaving your desk.

We’ve seen the Airtame team’s Cloud Platform. Already now I can see the value of being able to control all our Airtames from one central place. Having them connected to constant power, means it is easy for us to manage them without having to go to the individual classrooms.

How RTX integrated AIRTAME

Network integration

RTX has a classic enterprise IT infrastructure with different networks (VLANs) for different types of devices and also different authentication methods depending on the network. Guests receive a 24-hour voucher to log on to the network from the browser.

RTX has set the Airtames up on a separate VLAN, to which traffic on certain ports are routed from both their internal network and their guest network. The separate Airtame VLAN is set up as a wireless network with a hidden SSID that only the Airtame units are connected to.

This setup allows both clients on the guest network and employees on the internal network to access the Airtame without compromising security.

To enable easy discovery of all Airtames across both the employee and guest networks, the firewall was set up to proxy multicast traffic through IGMP proxying.

Manex is a family-owned company of over 50 engineers that has over 20 years of experience in creating automated technical solutions in the areas of product transportation and packaging, among others.

Some of our work includes designing different types of robots for our customers’ automated lines. Our “Pick and Place” robot, for instance, can pick up an item and place it on a tray.

Just like the automated assembly lines we create, Manex works towards smooth operations in our offices, as well.

That’s why we made the choice to go with Airtame when we were looking for a way to streamline our meetings.

How we use Airtame

We use Airtame for several reasons. To understand how Airtame has improved our work flow, let’s go over each use case individually:

Client meetings

Every day, our employees use drawing and 3D modeling programs to show our customers the engineering solutions we create for their automated lines.

It’s so important that we make a good first impression when we present our models and simulations in front of customers or management. To do this, we needed to make sure that meetings run smoothly from start to finish.

This is the main reason we started using Airtame. It’s hard to impress a customer during a presentation if you’re fumbling around with cables to connect your computer to a bigger screen.

Now, our business partners often make it a point to tell us that they have never seen this wireless HDMI system before. Not to mention, they get very enthusiastic that we implement modern ideas not only in our engineering solutions, but also in our work culture.

Collaborative employee meetings

In our conference room, it’s commonplace that more than one person would need to present at the same meeting. With an HDMI cable, this meant having to unplug and replug every time the presentation switched to a new speaker.

This constant interruption made it very difficult to stay focused during our meetings. Long story short, our previous cabled solution made communication ineffective.

Now that we’ve used Airtame for a few months, this interruption is gone. It’s been easier for us to smoothly and quickly switch from one person to another during a meeting.

Board meetings

I’m the CFO of Manex, which means I am responsible for the company’s economic and financial aspects.

Tracking our performance, internal reporting and data-driven decisions are essential to our business’ good health. A business that doesn’t track its financial data runs the risk of blindly operating.

I personally use Airtame for board meetings where I present the company’s economic results and I suggest new ways to develop the financial area.

The technical setup

I would be lying if I didn’t mention that the implementation of Airtame requires a certain amount of patience with the settings, depending on your company’s needs. But the result once it’s installed is definitely worth it!

At Manex, we’ve created the ideal hardware and system environment for using Airtame:

• 8 Airtames in daily use
• A router with 2.4 GHz and 5GHz antenna

We have 8 Airtames in the Manex office. As for our network setup, we use a router with 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz antenna.

Since Airtame relies on a quality wireless system, we had to increase the transfer speed of our old router. That’s because when you use a router with 2.4GHz, it’s possible that the router will not be able to transfer large amounts of data to Airtame. This will cause the quality of the resulting streams to suffer.

Now, before that scares you away, these are issues that the employees at Airtame can help you with. From our experience, if you happen to encounter a problem, their customer service team reacts very quickly.

As a family-owned company, we know the importance of tradition. As a company of engineers, however, we also know how important it is to stay up to date with technology. Take it from us, you don’t want to get stuck with HDMI cables just for the sake of old habits.

Every company needs to find their own way into the future, because the future will not wait for anyone. For Manex, Airtame was a big help in this.

GoMore, a platform for private car leasing that takes a revolutionary step within car ownership, finds itself in need of tracking their data and performance on a daily basis. As Vlad points out: the right data leads to the right decisions that subsequently achieve the right goals.

Needless to say, they use Airtame’s wireless HDMI capabilities to display KPI dashboards on each of their floors to keep the teams productive and on track to success. Nonetheless, what’s really worth discussing is how they use it to display the ‘can’t live without’ metrics on their screens. That’s where Vlad steps in:

Patricia (Outbound Manager, Airtame): Do you use Airtame: True or False?

Vlad (Head of Product Growth, GoMore): True. 🙂

P: How many? And why did you acquire them?

V: Well, that would be four. We were interested in the Airtame devices because, first of all, it allows us to get rid of some cables and that is always an added value in a company where you want your offices to be as clean as your designs. The GoMore office is a nice and well-designed place and Airtame contributed to that and increased the value of our offices.

On top of that, I really like that even if two people are using the same presentation, I can switch to my screen or to the other person’s screen back and forth. So, initially what attracted me the most were these connectivity features.

As we started using the Airtame devices around the office, we saw how easy it actually is to use the devices’ dashboard feature. My previous experience consisted mostly of the DIY solutions.

If you wanted to display a very simple link on the TV screen around the office, you would need a small Linux computer that required a lot of maintenance, right? It also required people to update the software that would sometimes be buggy. This time, at GoMore, we decided to go for the professional option, and we chose Airtame.

The GoMore office is a nice and well-designed place and Airtame contributed to that and increased the value of our offices.

P: How has Airtame made it easier to visualize your company’s data?

V: Well, like I said, the solution we used before wouldn’t refresh the link, so although our dashboard was a real-time one, it wasn’t actually real-time.

So, sometimes when we would go grab a cup of coffee, I remember one of my colleagues, Martin, would hit refresh on a little key that was dangling around and that’s not how GoMore is. We wanted to fix that issue once and for all (laughs). So, having the Airtame device update itself was exactly what we were looking for. We just didn’t know that there was such a product out at that time.

P: You keep telling me about displaying data. How important is it for GoMore to keep track of your data? Why? What are the outcomes? How does that affect your decisions?

V: It’s crucial. Even if not all our decisions have a right-away effect, the type of startup that has global ambitions will always look into more of a long-term view. This means focusing more on seasonality and metrics that relate to behavior and not necessarily to easy wins or to vanity metrics.

And I think my biggest focus is to harvest the data, collect, and manage the reporting, while everyone else’s need was to have real-time data, real-time information. As for me, I would actually wanna know when I go grab that cup of coffee exactly how many leads were generated today by the guys downstairs in Sales.

P: Do some teams use different data than others? Why?

V: Yes, definitely. That’s one of the key parts of GoMore: first of all, we must divide based on the market, based on users, and, thirdly, based on the value proposition. It can get a bit hectic and complicated, but the Sales or Support team, they get metrics that are tailored to their day-to-day job.

P: What is your ‘favorite’ part of the day to use the data that the dashboards display?

V: To be honest, I saw an increase in the conversations that we’re starting in the teams and that’s just because you have some information in front of you, so why not use that when you’re just chit-chatting over a coffee? It sounds like I drink a lot of coffee (laughs). But, that’s the point, right? Having the data in front of you and not relying on assumptions is what creates value for GoMore.

P: So, long story short, anybody can use the dashboard at any time of the day.

V: Yes. I don’t know if you can see, I have one behind me right now (chuckles).

P: Indeed you do (laughs). So, tell me: How long does it take to set it up?

V: Setting up the screen was actually very fast. We had a meeting with some great people from Airtame who dropped by and I initially set aside a full hour for that meeting, but basically setting up the Airtame together with the dashboard took us just 2-3 minutes. I think it took even less than 2 minutes. It was insanely fast, because we were laughing about it, like, “So what are we gonna do now? “(laughs).

P: Speaking of dashboards, which dashboard service do you use? Why?

V: Well, that was a very complicated choice to make because you know, there’s so many tools out there, and sometimes you’re only as good as your weakest tool. In the past, we used other solutions where we had issues integrating a lot of the analytics platforms or our own data layer.

What I found to work best was Geckoboard and it wasn’t only because you have a lot of services you can connect. The main reason was the design. I feel a lot of dashboards or companies that have the purpose to visualize data, they kind of miss out on really good, clear design and Geckoboard has that. So we went with them. We also wrote a script together to export some mixpanel events, but that’s a long and more geekier story (laughs).

There are so many tools out there, and sometimes you’re only as good as your weakest tool.

P: And so, what’s your opinion, do you think that Geckoboard dashboards work smoothly with your Airtame devices?

V: Yeah, and I looked a bit behind and I think it’s caching the dashboards, so when it’s refreshing it’s just piggybacking on Geckoboard’s mechanism to retrieve real-time data. I’m actually glad that I don’t have to do any troubleshooting in the links between Airtame TV and Airtame Geckoboard and I can just focus on the little box and little issues when it comes to our data platforms and that’s actually where you’re supposed to use most of your time. Not to set up the devices, but to actually get the value out of them.

P: And the last question for you, Vlad: What is your advice from a strategic point of view, on using dashboard services?

V: I recently read that being an entrepreneur and working in a startup actually produces more stress than working in a regular job. I think, the first step to reduce the stress level is not to fuel your business with assumptions and always make sure that you’re walking on a very proven path, on something you can go back and see, like, “OK, I’m actually not so stressed that we have this outrageous goal, because I split it into key battles that we must win to get there.”

And I think, sometimes, people working in a startup are mostly in sales mode and not necessarily in thinking mode on ‘how I can actually make an impact’. We’re presenting the same narrative as we do to our users and bragging about our services and we start drinking our own Kool-Aid so to speak. So, that’s why I think that data-driven teams will have less of a stressful activity and just a better time overall delivering on their goals.

P: I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for your time Vlad. Great input!
